Please read this special note from the Castellanos Family
Sofia was born on February 3, 2007. She was a beautiful little girl with gorgeous curls and deep brown eyes. She had cerebral palsy and was unable to walk, talk or eat by mouth. She was 100% dependent on her family for all her needs. Sofia was a very special child. She taught us all how to look past what we see on the outside and to look deeper. She could light up a room with her beautiful smile.
Sofia passed away on March 17, 2018 due to respiratory issues. She left a mark on the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
She is dearly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
The child life team at Sutter is amazing. They gave us so much support over the years during Sofia’s hospital stays. Child life specialists are pediatric health care professionals who work with children and families in hospitals and other settings to help them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, and disability. They also provide information, support, and guidance to parents, siblings, and other family members.
Some of the services they provide are listed below:
• Psychological preparation for tests, surgeries, and other medical procedures
• Support during medical procedures
• Therapeutic medical and recreational play
• Sibling support
• Support for grief and bereavement
• Emergency room interventions
• Hospital pre-admission tours
• Outpatient consultation with families
• Coordinate special events, entertainment, and activities for patients and their families
• Educate caregivers, administrators, and the general public about the needs of children under stress.
Sofia spent a lot of time in the hospital in her 11 years of life. The child life team means so much to us and we will never forget all that they have done for Sofia and our family. They helped our family to get through many tough days and the absolute worst day of our lives. The child life team gave us gifts that we will cherish forever and we are so thankful to have.
Thank you for joining us in giving back to such an amazing program!
